Due to the drop in prices for iPad Air 2’s in September and the support of our administration, we were able to purchase enough iPads so that all of our Grade 1 classrooms will have iPads at at 2:1 ratio. We have spent a great deal of time these last few weeks getting these new iPads into our Mobile Device Management System (MDM). At the same time, we worked on revising our management of our previous student iPads so that these can be more easily managed. It will be much easier now to to support the learning needs of students and respond more quickly to teacher requests to add or delete apps on an “as needed” basis. We also added iPad charging cabinets in Rooms 5 and 10. Finally, we have a sufficient number of additional iPads in a rolling cart so we can have whole class lessons on a weekly basis to ensure that students can make progress with the apps and other tools that they will use more independently on a daily basis in the classroom.

1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders Move Forward with Learning to Use the iPad
All of our Grades 1, 2 and 3 students have had an introduction/review of the iPad as a learning tool. Initially, we have worked on creating classroom sets of rules for use of the iPads. We look forward to using some familiar apps, such as Wixie and Encyclopedia Britannica, and some apps that are new to us, such as Popplet (mind-mapping) and Front Row (personalized math and reading comprehension practice). Students who learning coding last year using Scratch Jr. have already jumped right back and are busy creating stories independently using the coding.
We are very excited to continue using Seesaw - a student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students of all ages to independently document and share what they are learning at school. Students can use photos, videos, drawings, text notes, links or PDFs to show what they know and store evidence in their digital portfolio. Currently, students are taking photos of work and recording reflections about their work. Others are recording themselves reading to demonstrate fluency.
